Maximizing Space in a Small En-Suite

A small en-suite doesn't have to feel cramped. In fact, some of our most successful luxury refits at Novo Plumbing have been in the tightest of spaces. With the right design choices, even a tiny room can feel like a high-end hotel bathroom.
If you're planning a renovation for a compact en-suite in Surrey or Berkshire, here is how we approach maximizing every square inch.
1. The "Floating" Effect
Wall-hung toilets and floating vanities are essential for small bathrooms. By exposing the floor underneath the fixtures, you trick the eye into perceiving more floor area, which immediately makes the room feel larger. It also creates a much cleaner, more modern look and makes cleaning the floor a breeze.
2. Wet Room Styling and Low-Profile Trays
If space is truly tight, consider a full wet room design. Removing the bulky shower tray and opting for a seamless, tanked floor with a simple frameless glass screen opens up the room entirely. If a full wet room isn't practical, a low-profile shower tray (often just 25mm high) achieves a similar minimalist look without the structural requirements of a wet room.
3. Large Format Tiles: The Pro Secret
It's a common misconception that small rooms need small tiles. In reality, small tiles mean more grout lines, which creates a "grid" effect that can make a room feel cluttered and closed-in. Large format tiles (e.g., 600x600mm or 1200x600mm) result in fewer grout lines, creating a smoother, more expansive visual surface that makes the space feel significantly wider.
4. Recessed Storage (Niches and Cabinets)
In a small en-suite, anything that protrudes from the wall is an obstacle. We recommend "stealing" space from the wall cavity to create recessed shower niches for shampoo and soap, and recessed mirrored cabinets for toothbrushes and toiletries. This keeps your surfaces clear and your floor space open.
5. Strategic Lighting and Mirrors
A large, well-placed mirror can effectively double the perceived size of a room. We often install wall-to-wall mirrors or large illuminated mirrors that bounce light around the space. Pair this with layered lighting—cool task lighting for the mirror and warm, dimmable mood lighting for evening use—to add depth and atmosphere.
Choosing the Right Fixtures
When every centimetre counts, fixture choice is critical. Look for "short projection" toilets and slimline vanity units specifically designed for compact spaces. Many leading brands now offer luxury ranges that provide the same high-end feel in a smaller footprint.
Small En-Suite FAQs
Can I have a wet room on an upper floor?
Yes, absolutely. With modern tanking (waterproofing) systems, we can create perfectly safe, leak-proof wet rooms on any floor of your home. It's one of our specialities at Novo.
Are large tiles more expensive to install?
The tiles themselves can be slightly more expensive, and they require a flatter subfloor, but the reduction in grout lines and the superior finish usually make them the best choice for luxury en-suites.
How long does an en-suite refit take?
A typical en-suite refit takes between 10 and 14 working days, depending on whether we are changing the layout or adding features like underfloor heating.
